Vodka History Museum

The Vodka History Museum, telling about the 500-year history of vodka, is situated within the precincts of the Kremlin in Izmailovo, Moscow. This location is quite symbolic, because Moscow was actually the “place of birth” of this famous drink, the 15th century being the starting point of its history.

The atmosphere of the museum carries the visitors into the many-sided world of Russian culture, history and drinking traditions.

In the museum one can get acquainted with Russian table customs, curious facts connected with consumption of “bread wine” as it was the most popular name for vodka for a long time.

The staff of the museum will tell the guests about the appearance of distillation in Russia, about the first drinking houses of Ivan the Terrible and great feasts of Peter the Great, about the introduction of the state vodka standard of 40°, and about the Soviet period in the history of the drink.

The third room of the museum is given to the modern brands of vodka and the best Russian producers.

Tasting sessions in the Traktir

In addition to an interesting collection, the Museum has reproduced in one of its halls the interior decoration of a Traktir (Tavern) of the 19th century.  In the Traktir one can taste the best sorts of vodka that are currently produced in Russia, compare their qualities and, what is also important, have a substantial meal cooked by our chef according to the national traditions.

Following the best Russian traditions, guests of our Museum will be introduced to some exceptional vodka souvenirs: vodka bottles (“shtoffs”) decorated as Matryoshka nesting dolls and Gzhel wares, exclusive sets of shot glasses made of crystal and metal, and present sets from famous vodka makers with a logo of the Vodka History Museum.

The guests will surely be interested in a new opportunity to order a vodka label with the picture of themselves, which will be ready in just 30 minutes.

The museum is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
